Sweet 16 Portraits at Union 206: A Family-Centered Session in Alexandria, VA

Some portrait sessions are more than just a shoot—they’re a reminder of why I do this work in the first place.

Kylie’s Sweet 16 session was one of those.

I first connected with the Dorsey family through mutual friends at Team Lloyd Irvin, where I’ve done creative work and ad campaigns. Over time, I got to know Elijah and Corey Dorsey better through those circles, and eventually, Corey reached out to book an engagement shoot with his fiancée Victoria. That’s when I first met Kubie—Kylie’s mother.

A few months later, Kubie reached out again, this time asking if I’d photograph Kylie’s Sweet 16 portraits. She already had a vision in mind, complete with a mood board and matching props. We booked Union 206 in Alexandria, VA—a space I work in often—and planned the shoot around a softer, sentimental vibe that would fit the occasion.

What stood out to me most wasn’t just the level of preparation—it was who showed up. Corey, Elijah, Victoria, and their mom (Kylie’s aunt) all attended. You could feel how tight-knit the family was from the moment they walked in. It reminded me of my own family—the kind that shows up for each other, no matter what.

During the session, something shifted. Kylie’s aunt quietly asked if the motorcycle in the studio was available to include in a few shots. That’s when I learned about Kylie’s father, who had passed away in a motorcycle accident. The idea was to honor his memory—something subtle, but deeply felt. Kubie had tears in her eyes when we took those portraits. That moment stuck with me.

I’ve done a lot of portrait sessions in the DMV area—everything from branding and creative shoots to milestone moments like this. But it’s always the personal ones, the ones where people bring their full selves, that stay with me. This was more than a birthday shoot—it was a chapter in a bigger story of love, legacy, and presence.
